Reaccredited by the Commission of Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (C.F.A.) as an Excelsior Agency

body

Submitted By: John A. Bolduc, Chief of Police

Strategic Plan Link: The City's Goal of a high-performing city government organization.

Executive Summary (General Business): In 1997, the agency was awarded state accredited status through C.F.A. (Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation). Since then, the department has been reaccredited an additional eight times with the last four awards received in 2013, 2016, 2019, and again on December 7, 2022, with the distinction of “Excelsior” status.

Presentation Information: Chief Bolduc will say a few words that will last under five minutes.

Staff Recommendation: Request that the Council hear the department’s brief presentation regarding C.F.A. reaccreditation.

Background: The Port St. Lucie Police Department has received state reaccreditation with excelsior status through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (C.F.A.). The Commissions meets three times per year to oversee the accreditation program and to officially accredit agencies that have passed the rigorous review process.  Each state accreditation cycle is valid for a period of three years.

Accreditation is recognized as a means of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism by obtaining certification by an independent reviewing authority that an agency has met specific requirements and prescribed standards. Accreditation is a voluntary process and provides the agency with a set of standards that are considered "best practices" for professional policing.  Florida law enforcement agencies can attain state accredited status through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (C.F.A.)

The Port St. Lucie Police Department has ingrained accreditation into its everyday culture. It is a comparative compliance agency, attaining both national and state accreditation status, with national accreditation dating back to 1991. State accreditation through C.F.A. was initially received in 1997 and the agency has received reaccreditation through C.F.A. an additional eight times. The most recent award was received with excelsior status on December 7, 2022. The agency was also awarded excelsior status in 2013, 2016, and 2019. To achieve excelsior status, the agency must have demonstrated a commitment to accreditation by being awarded five successful reaccreditation cycles by the Commission.
