Executive Summary (General Business): Hurricane Milton made landfall on the evening of Wednesday, October 9, 2024 as a Category 3 Hurricane. Hurricane Milton hit the City of Port St. Lucie with tropical storm force winds, confirmed tornadoes within the City of Port St. Lucie, and wind gusts at Category 1 Hurricane strength. The City continues assessing damages and providing assistance to neighboring jurisdictions, necessitating the extension of the City’s State of Local Emergency.
Presentation Information: The City Manager will be available to answer questions if needed.
Staff Recommendation: Move that the Council Approve the Resolution.
Alternate Recommendations:
1. Move that the Council amend the recommendation and provide further direction.
Background: Pursuant to Chapter 98 of the Code of Ordinances, the City Manager has authority to declare a state of local emergency, which he did on October 9, 2024. The City Council approved and ratified the Declaration via Resolution 24-R80. Hurricane Milton made landfall on the West coast of Florida as a category 3 hurricane. Hurricane Milton hit the City of Port St. Lucie with tropical storm force winds, confirmed tornadoes within the City of Port St. Lucie, and wind gusts at Category 1 Hurricane strength. St. Lucie County remains in a State of Emergency, as well as the declared a State of Emergency by the Governor pursuant to Executive Order 24-214 that remains in effect. The City continues to assess damage and provide assistance to neighboring jurisdictions. Due to these factors, the City Manager signed the first extension of the declaration of the state of emergency for a period of seven (7) days, effective from October 16, 2024, at 5:00 a.m. to October 23, 2024 at 5:00 a.m., and signed the second extension for an additional period of seven (7) days, effective from October 23, 2024, at 5:00 a.m. to October 30, 2024, at 5:00 a.m.
