Strategic Plan Link: The City’s Vision to put residents first.
Executive Summary (General Business): Councilman Pickett proposes a Veterans & First Responders Banner Program to honor veterans and first responders with banners displayed on decorative light poles along Crosstown Parkway and potentially Village Parkway. Using breakaway arm systems and banding, banners ensure structural integrity and safety. Families or veterans and first responders will fund banners, fostering civic pride and recognition.
Presentation Information: Christina will present to Council, on behalf of Councilman Pickett.
Staff Recommendation: Request that the Council discuss the proposed program.
Background: The Veterans & First Responders Banner Program for Hometown Heroes is proposed to recognize and honor the sacrifices of local veterans and active-duty service members. This initiative aims to celebrate their contributions while fostering civic pride and patriotism within the community.
The program takes inspiration from successful models in other cities and will feature personalized banners displaying the honoree’s name, rank, branch of service, or job title. These banners will be purchased by the honorees or their families and installed by the City on decorative light poles along Crosstown Parkway and/or Village Parkway. The installation process will use banded brackets to protect the integrity of the poles, avoiding permanent alterations or damage.
Program Overview:
- Application Process: Interested veterans, first responders, or their families will apply for a banner through the City, adhering to established qualifications and guidelines.
- Banner Procurement: To ensure uniformity and cost-effectiveness, the City will select a vendor through an RFP process and coordinate all banner orders.
- Installation & Display: Once received, the banners will be installed by City staff and displayed for a designated period.
- Banner Return: After removal, the banners will be returned to the honorees or their families as keepsakes.
This program represents an opportunity for the community to visibly demonstrate its gratitude and respect for those who serve and protect.
