Executive Summary (General Business): At the City Council’s 2021 Strategic Planning session the Council directed staff to request presentations from area education partners to inform the priorities of the City’s Education Goal. Representatives from St. Lucie Public Schools, area Charter Schools, the Children’s Services Council and the Early Learning Coalition will provide presentations for the Council’s information as they consider updates to the Strategic Plan.
Presentation Information: St. Lucie Public Schools will provide a 30-minute presentation, followed approximately with 10-minute presentations by the Somerset group, which includes Somerset St. Lucie, Somerset College Preparatory, and Somerset Bethany Academies; Charter Schools USA which includes Renaissance Charter School at Tradition, Renaissance Charter School of St. Lucie and soon Tradition Preparatory High School, the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County and the Early Learning Coalition of St. Lucie County.
Staff Recommendation: Move that the Council hear the presentation, consider recommendations by staff and finalize the priorities of the Strategic Plan’s Education Goal.
Alternate Recommendations:
1. Move that the Council amend the recommendation and hear the presentation, consider recommendations by staff and finalize the priorities of the Strategic Plan’s Education Goal.
2. Move that the Council provide staff direction.
Background: The City annually outlines opportunities to collaborate and partner to support quality education, necessary for building a strong city. The City’s current Strategic Goal of Quality Education for All Residents includes two Strategic Initiatives: 1. Partner with St. Lucie Public Schools (priority project: St. Lucie Public Schools Legislative Program) and 2. Career Technical Academy (priority project: facilitate a public career technical school). The City Council is seeking input from area Education partners as it considers updates to its Strategic Plan on topics including
• the state of truancy and school attendance
• child mental health
• Career technical education programs
• How institutions have managed learning through the COVID-19 pandemic and impacts to students
• Top 3 objectives and greatest needs from the community
• How the City can help
