Executive Summary (General Business): Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall sometime after 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 as a Category 3 Hurricane. The City is expected to receive hurricane level winds and rain, and are expected in the next 48 hours.

 

Presentation Information: The City Manager will be available to answer questions if needed.

 

Staff Recommendation: Move that the Council  Approve Resolution affirming the City Manager's Declaration of State of Local Emergency.

 

Alternate Recommendations:

1.                     Move that the Council amend the recommendation and provide further direction.

 

Background: Pursuant to Chapter 98 of the Code of Ordinances, the City Manager has authority to declare a state of local emergency. Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on the West coast of Florida as at least a category 3 hurricane. As the hurricane moves across Florida, the City is expected to receive heavy winds and rain, which warrants preparedness against substantial injury, harm and damage to persons and property. The Governor of Florida has already declared a State of Emergency pursuant to Executive Order 24-214, as amended. St. Lucie County public schools are closed for Tuesday, October 8th, Wednesday, October 9th, and Thursday, October 10th.  St. Lucie County is expecting to declare a state of local emergency.

 

Special Consideration: Time Sensitive.

 

Location of Project:  Citywide.
