Strategic Plan Link: The City's Goal of a high-performing city government organization.

Executive Summary (General Business): PSLPRD has recently achieved three major accomplishments - Agency Accreditation by the Commission for Accreditation of Park & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), winner of 2021 Florida Recreation & Park Association (FRPA) Innovative Programming Community Building and winner of 2021 National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA) Innovation in Health Award.

Presentation Information: Approx. 10 minutes by PSLPRD staff and video.

Staff Recommendation: Request that the Council hear of PSLPRD’s recent accomplishments.

Background: On December 3, 2019, PSLPRD announced to NRPA the Department’s intent to pursue CAPRA accreditation. Once intent is received by NRPA, that agency has two years to assemble and submit their Final Report.

To receive CAPRA accreditation, of which 193 agencies of the nearly 24,000 park and recreation agencies nationally have achieved, PSLPRD had to demonstrate compliance for 36 fundamental standards and 118 non-fundamental, or 154 total standards. For initial accreditation, we were required to meet 92%, or 142, of these standards, and must continually meet additional standards in our future reaccreditation. Reaccreditation occurs every five years.

On September 23, 2021, NRPA announced, at their Annual Conference in Nashville, TN, that PSLPRD had achieved CAPRA accreditation.

Each year, Florida Recreation & Park Association (FRPA) awards agencies who have provided exemplary programming, and, in the case of PSLPRD’s 2021 Innovative Programming Award Community Building, FRPA recognizes the importance of creative, trend setting ideas as the cornerstone of expanding community participation in leisure programs. The Innovative Programming Award honors agencies that have demonstrated leadership in successfully developing and executing programs or events that support and advance public knowledge of the role of parks and recreation in health, community building, economic impact and development and environmental resiliency and sustainability.

“Healthy U: A Series of Conversations,” PSLPRD’s innovative program which integrates mental health initiatives into our traditional park and recreation programming, was presented FRPA’s 2021 Innovative Programming Award Community Building, at the FRPA Annual Conference on September 1, 2021, in Orlando, FL.

Each year, National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA) National Awards are presented to individuals and agencies across the U.S. to honor those efforts - both professional and personal - in the field of parks and recreation. NRPA’s Innovation in Health Award recognizes a park and recreation agency leading an innovative project that fosters a culture of health in their community. Innovative programs that have made a difference in the health of their community are encouraged to apply.

“Healthy U: A Series of Conversations,” PSLPRD’s innovative program which integrates mental health initiatives into our traditional park and recreation programming, was presented NRPA’S 2021 Innovation in Health Award at the NRPA Annual Conference on September 23, 2021, at their Best of the Best Ceremony in Nashville, TN.
