Background: The Crosstown Parkway Extension is the culmination of 40 years of planning for the third crossing of the St. Lucie River, alleviating traffic congestion, and providing an additional hurricane evacuation route. This final segment of the overall Crosstown Parkway project included approximately 1.5 miles of roadway improvements beginning at Manth Lane and a 0.75-mile bridge over the North Fork of the St. Lucie River, ending at the intersection with US-1. The bridge traverses a highly environmentally sensitive area, which required minimization of wetland impacts and protection of the Savannas Preserve State Park. This project features unique architecture for the city’s signature bridge, drainage design, utility coordination/design, and extensive landscaping. The project includes the new waterfront Crosstown Plaza, a recreation area that provides a trailhead to the Crosstown Parkway sidewalks and includes an ADA-accessible canoe launch.
