Strategic Plan Link: The City’s Mission to enhance our community’s quality of life.

Executive Summary (General Business): The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are a national, non-profit, non-political volunteer organization for women who are directly descended from a patriot of the American Revolution.  They promote veteran’s issues, historical preservation, educational scholarships and patriotism in their local communities.  The local DAR chapter, St. Lucie River Chapter, wishes to donate a 24” x 24” bronze plaque commemorating the men and women who achieved American independence during the American Revolution 1775-1783.

Presentation Information: Brad Keen will introduce representatives from the local St. Lucie River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution who will donate a plaque to City Council.

Staff Recommendation: Request that the Council accept the bronze plaque commemorating the patriots who achieved American independence and authorize its placement on an exterior wall of City Hall, adjacent to City Hall’s main entrance.

Background: For many years, the St. Lucie River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have presented/donated American flags to City Council so that they could be flown over City buildings and city park properties.  In September 2023, the local DAR chapter contacted the City Council Office and offered to provide a Patriots Marker to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Nation’s founding.  The marker or plaque would commemorate the patriots of the American Revolution and be placed in or on the Port St. Lucie City Hall.  The plaque was cast and delivered to the local DAR chapter in 2024, however, due to the planned renovation of City Hall including the lobby area, the donation of the plaque to City Council was delayed until the renovation of City Hall was completed.  In January 2026, several representatives from the local DAR chapter met with City staff to identify an appropriate location in which to hang the plaque at City Hall.  It was determined and agreed to by all that the best location would be an exterior wall near the main entrance to City Hall.  The plaque, which measures 24” x 24”,  honors all Revolutionary War Patriots and specifically commemorates the men and women who achieved American independence 1775-1783.

Issues/Analysis: The plaque, once mounted to an exterior wall of City Hall, will commemorate the patriots of the American Revolution and be in place prior to the 250th anniversary of the Nation’s founding, July 4th, 2026.
