Strategic Plan Link: The City’s Mission to be responsive to our community.

Executive Summary (General Business): The St. Lucie County Humane Society submitted a proposal to the City thru the Mayor for the City to become an investor in the Humane Society to ensure the sustainability of the Humane Society and provide for a stable animal shelter capable of meeting the needs of the City of Port St. Lucie.

Presentation Information: N/A

Staff Recommendation: Request that the Council discuss the proposal and provide staff direction to follow-up on the proposal by the Humane Society and evaluate the feasibility of the Humane Society to meet the needs of the City in reference to animal sheltering services.

Background: The City did not renew the agreement for animal sheltering services on October 1, 2019 with the Humane Society of St. Lucie County because we were unable to come to terms on the renewal.

Financial Information: The City is currently paying St. Lucie County $12,708.33 monthly to operate a temporary animal shelter until a permanent shelter provider is located.  Staff is also assisting in operation of the shelter in additional to their normal animal control duties.
